As with any Staff Association whose mission is to safeguard the rights and interest of its members and to promote their welfare, its success depends on the willingness of staff to donate their time and adequate financial support, essential to carry out many of the tasks, which include:
WHAT CAN THE USSA DO FOR YOU?
The role of the USSA is to provide support to staff with individual issues as well as to represent the staff of the Secretariat as a whole to the Administration with the objective of ensuring UNAIDS is an employer of choice.
Specifically, the USSA can:
- Counsel and provide guidance in difficult situations (harassment, abuse, grievance) to help you to find suitable solutions/options;
- Advise you on your rights and provide access to legal assistance and insurance;
- Hold the Administration accountable with regard to due processes on staff rules, regulations and policies;
- Consolidate and communicate to Senior Management staff opinion and concerns, act as an early-warning system and prevention mechanism;
- Take an active part in decision-making processes, negotiations and other issues which affect our employment conditions;
- Attend monthly meetings with Senior Management and follow-up on key issues;
- Support FICSA (Federation of International Civil Servants Association), our ONLY representative at the UN General Assembly and other administrative decision-making bodies at UN level; and
- Set-up and monitor time-limited working groups on specific topics, where all staff are welcome to join.
WHAT DOES THE USSA NOT DO?
- Take sides;
- Solve or mediate individual cases;
- Deal in rumour or unsubstantiated facts;
- Write new staff rules and policies.
WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN THE USSA?
For the bargain price equivalent of a lunch per month (0.2% of your salary), you benefit from all the above services. Even if you think you don’t use the USSA, all staff benefit from the work and the services it offers such as: an increase in G and P salaries, maternity leave for short terms, moving from short term to fixed term contracts for more staff, as well as more transparent selection and mobility procedures.
Please remember - when a problem arises, it is often too late to join the USSA, as you need to be a USSA paying member for more than 6 months to be able to benefit from the collective USSA legal insurance.
